Highlights

The first build of xadcast. Every episode is transcribed and analysed on the device, ad breaks are skipped automatically, and a skip can always be undone with one tap.

Ad detection

  • Episodes are transcribed locally while they play. Detection switches on shortly after pressing play and improves as the episode goes on.
  • Both pre-recorded spots and host-read adverts are detected.
  • A skipped break is drawn as a hollow band on the seek bar. Tapping it replays the break.
  • The ad chip on the player and episode screens shows what is being skipped and how much time has been saved, with a per-episode override of the global setting.
  • On an episode that has not been analysed yet, the player briefly holds before the content starts so a cold-open pre-roll is skipped from the first press of play.
  • Once the playing episode is analysed, the next episodes in the queue are read ahead so they start on their first word.
  • Both models ship inside the app. Nothing is downloaded at runtime.

Player

  • Live captions that follow the audio, with tap-to-seek and search within the episode. Lines inside an ad break are dimmed rather than removed.
  • Playback speeds from 0.8× to 3×, a sleep timer, skip forward 30 s and back 15 s.
  • A persistent mini player, lock-screen and notification controls, and Android Auto.
  • Chapter marks read from the show notes, with play-from-here.
  • The last episode and position come back after a crash without reloading the audio.

Library and downloads

  • Search a catalogue of roughly 333,000 podcasts, or add any feed by RSS URL.
  • Subscribe from xadcast://, feed:// and pcast:// links.
  • A queue with drag-to-reorder that is kept downloaded in queue order.
  • Per-podcast auto-download windows: keep the newest N, count played episodes, delete after playing.
  • Background refresh with Wi-Fi-only and while-charging options.

Known issues

  • English only.
  • Chapter titles are not generated automatically; only marks present in the show notes are used.
